Key differences

Verdictan vs. Microsoft Azure APIM AI Gateway: Key differences

Azure offers several gateway tiers and policy paths, so a general AI Gateway label does not prove feature parity.

  1. The dedicated AI Gateway tier is preview

Microsoft describes the AI Gateway tier as a fully managed preview for models and MCP tools.

  2. APIM supports several backend strategies

The backend load balancer supports round-robin, weighted, priority and session-aware distribution, plus circuit breakers.

  3. Content checks use Azure AI Content Safety

The LLM content-safety policy can inspect prompts and completions, apply blocklists and check prompt attacks.

Common questions

What to ask before you decide

Is the Azure AI gateway a separate APIM product?

Microsoft says the established AI gateway capabilities extend API Management. It also offers a dedicated AI Gateway tier in preview.

Can Azure APIM govern non-Microsoft models?

Yes. Microsoft documents OpenAI-compatible third-party and self-hosted endpoints in addition to Foundry and Azure OpenAI.

Does Azure APIM provide model load balancing?

Yes. It documents round-robin, weighted, priority and session-aware backend distribution plus circuit breakers.

How does Azure APIM inspect prompts?

The LLM content-safety policy sends configured checks to Azure AI Content Safety and can evaluate categories, blocklists and prompt attacks.

Does every Azure gateway support every AI policy?

No. Microsoft publishes a gateway matrix with policy and monitoring differences, including self-hosted semantic-cache limits.
